 Administration Corner

  Head of School

Dear HIS Community,

Fall Break already--time has been flying by, and I was amazed on my Friday drive out to Niseko last week to see all the brilliant fall colors.  Hokkaido really is a beautiful place to experience the four seasons.

Looking back on the weeks leading up to our first extended break, there is a lot to be proud of.  We have maintained strong health & safety protocols and, thus far, avoided having any cases of Covid-19 in our school community.  Athletics, activities, and outdoor learning have all restarted with great success.  And over nearly two months, from EY to grade 12, all of our students have engaged in authentic experiential learning and experienced rigorous, targeted academic support.  Plus much more.  It has been a huge collective effort, and it is worth taking a moment to celebrate and appreciate how far we have come.  Our students are growing into leaders for a brighter future, and we appreciate everyone’s work to support their growth.

Thank you and I wish you all a rejuvenating Fall Break.

Sincerely yours,

Tim Schlosser
Head of School

WASC School Community Surveys

As part of our WASC accreditation process, all HIS parents, students, and teachers will soon receive surveys (at the end of October).

When you receive this survey, please take the time to complete it carefully and thoroughly.  The insights you provide will help us immensely as we continue working towards our school improvement goals.

Student MAP Testing

Last year, our Spring testing session for MAP had to be cancelled due to school building closure in response to Covid 19. This unfortunately meant that we lost the chance to measure student growth for the school year (an important aspect of MAP testing).

MAP scores for the 2019 Fall semester were recorded in the system, however, and will be included on reports generated this year for returning students.

By fall break, we will have completed all Reading and Language tests for students in grade 4 to grade 10.

After fall break, we will complete any make up tests required and Math tests.

October Virtue of the Month: Friendliness
“Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.”
Sitting Bull

"Best Learning I Have Seen:
I got to watch the MP1 students collaboratively support their reading fluency while Mr. Sinclair was assessing individual students. I was extremely impressed with the differentiation, the systematic approach, the rotation of activities, and the burgeoning confidence in his classroom.
Great job, MP1, and keep reading every day!

Skating at Tomari Rink
We had a wonderful day of skating for the children. It was a joy to watch first-time skaters get on the ice while the experienced ones were able to show a good deal of growth from last year. Our annual skating trip is a good benchmark of how we are doing as a school and I was quite happy to see evidence of teamwork, joyfulness, and cooperation.
Thank you Ms. Liene for arranging for the Niseko Bus service and thank you teachers for your help in getting each child onto the ice.

Daily Temperature Slip-Thank You
Thank you for your continued diligence with our daily temperature slip check system. This is particularly important as we note an uptick in case of counts in Hokkaido this week. We appreciate your continued patience with this and certainly hope that sometime later this school year it is no longer necessary.
