Head of School
Dear HIS Community,
The first snow is falling in Sapporo and Niseko! It seems that Hokkaido’s world-famous winter is beginning in earnest now, and it’s time to make sure students are coming to school bundled up and ready.
In many places worldwide, and here in Hokkaido as well, we are seeing some uptick covid case counts as the weather gets colder. As always, our goals are to minimize the risk of school closure and protect the health and safety of our school community--while also staying prepared for the possibility of switching to a remote or hybrid model if circumstances change. As we examine the various decisions we may have to consider in the coming months (when to re-open certain after school activities or approve overnight trips, for example), we are continuing to use expert guidance and scenario-planning tools to ensure that we are as prepared as possible to make responsible decisions--no matter what the future may bring.
I would also like to thank all families for their participation in this week’s digital Parent-Teacher Conferences. Both as a teacher and as an administrator, I’ve always loved conference days; it’s refreshing to have the full school-student-family partnership all in one place, and these conversations can be an important opportunity for breakthroughs and insights into how to support students. The information teachers gathered from these meetings will be immensely valuable in targeting support for individual student needs.
Stay warm, stay healthy, and see you soon,
Head of School

WASC School Community Surveys
As part of our WASC accreditation process, all HIS parents, students, and teachers have received surveys to complete by November 20, 2020.
Please take the time to complete the survey carefully and thoroughly. Insights you provide will help us immensely as we continue working towards our school improvement goals.
This year, we would again like to ask the HIS community to support Project Santa by donating gifts, which will be taken to three orphanages in Hokkaido (Hokko Gakuen in Ikutahara near Kitami, Nansoen in Sapporo, and Kousho Gakuen in Sapporo) and distributed amongst the children.
Starting on Monday, November 16th, HIS students are asked to bring donated gifts to the school. Please read the following instructions carefully:
The price range of a gift from 1500 yen to 2000 yen
Each student should buy a present for the same gender and age level.
Families with more than one child at HIS are welcome to donate just one gift total if they would prefer
NO CARDS / LETTERS / NAME should be attached to the gift
Please write your age, gender, a simple description of the gift on a “post-it” and attach it to the gift.
(ex; “age 7, girl, stuffed animal”)
Please do not write anything directly on the present
Important: Please do not wrap the gifts
All gifts should be store-bought (no used or 100 yen shop items please)
Presents are to be brought to HIS by Friday, December 11th (at the latest)
＊ Elementary Students: Student Council will collect your gifts from your homeroom teacher
＊ Secondary Students: Please deposit gifts in the box found near the library front desk
We appreciate your contributions to help us make the holiday season more joyful for others.
