Head of School
Dear HIS Community,
It has been so exciting to have all of our students back, and we are grateful to our families and teachers for everything they have done to support a successful start to the school year. In my first weeks as Head of School, I have been struck again and again by the kindness, warmth, and determination of this community.
Looking ahead to the weeks to come, we are continuing with our planned restart of after school sports and activities (on a limited basis). As always, student safety is our #1 priority, and we will continue to closely monitor public health guidance and utilize research-based best practices for Covid-19 prevention.
As students begin to engage deeply in academic work over the month to come, please be in touch with teachers for recommendations on how to support language development at home and ensure students are starting off the year with good study habits. We are here to help.
Here’s to a productive first month of learning together--it’s a great time to be a Husky!
From the Principal’s Office
Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year!
I am thrilled to welcome you back to school and I feel privileged to be working with such an outstanding staff again this year. Together I believe we have prepared a smooth transition into a new school year for our students during this uncertain time.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to three new teachers:
- Ms. Ann van den Borne (our new PE teacher),
- Ms. Wai Kuan Yong (our new music teacher) and
- Mr. Dan Stern (our new librarian and grade 6 teacher for LA, SS, and Science)
Finally, we would all like to welcome Mr. Tim Schlosser, our new Head of School.
Mr. Schlosser, the teaching and support staff, and I have worked hard this summer to plan for a safe opening of school and to implement best practices to mitigate the risks associated with Covid-19.
If anyone has any concerns or questions about this upcoming school year, please do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com
Parent Orientations Due to social distancing concerns we will need to conduct our parent orientation sessions via zoom this September. We hope that parents will join us then. Although it cannot take place face to face, it is at least interactive and there will be opportunities for you to ask questions and “virtually meet” each other as well.
The Elementary Parent Orientation will be held September 1st at 5:30 pm
The Secondary Parent Orientation will be held also at 5:30 on September 3rd
At both sessions, Mr. Schlosser and I will be presenting details of the school life and curriculum at HIS.

Greetings from HIS Niseko.
I am very proud of our team as we embark on yet another year of growth at HIS Niseko. This year, our campus initiatives are: "community well being and development, student retention and striving for academic excellence"
As of this writing, I am proud to announce that we have 36 students currently enrolled to begin the school year at HIS Niseko. We have 9 Early Year students, 16 MP1 students and 11 MP3 students.
This year, we welcome the Chen, Ryd, Fang-Ono, Ruffato, Golowacz, Pribadi, and Fachin families to our community.
Early Years Teacher: Emily Atkinson
HIS Niseko will have a new Early Years teacher for the 2020-2021 school year.
I am delighted to announce that Ms. Emily Atkinson has completed her teacher certification and will begin her career as our new Early Years Teacher. Emily is a rock solid individual with an extremely impressive work ethic. In her bio, she writes:
“Emily Atkinson graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first class degree in Japanese Studies. During her studies she spent a year abroad studying at Kyoto University where she furthered her proficiency in the Japanese language. Whilst in Kyoto she spent most evenings teaching English to Japanese children which she greatly enjoyed. As a child, Emily had been immersed in a broad assortment of cultures having spent most of her life in Malaysia and further yet having been brought up by a mother who is Japanese and a father who is British. Emily has always been naturally drawn to working with children.”
Emily Atkinson is a highly proficient, award-winning painter, a former football captain, and has a black belt in Taekwondo.
Part Time Music Teacher: Hiroki Hoshino
HIS Niseko will have a music teacher.
I am delighted to announce that HIS Niseko will have, for the first time, a proper music instructor. Mr. Hiroki Hoshino is a highly decorated jazz musician and tutor.
I hired Hiroki back in February to start a music choir for elementary school. Alas, In his latest email me, Hiroki writes:
I've done some research re: choir, and like predicted, there doesn't seem a safe way to run a traditional choir because of increased droplets/aerosols produced (save for outdoor rehearsing like you suggested or over Zoom, but they come with impracticalities!). But I stumbled across an interesting idea (bear with me!), how about a "humming" choir? I am thinking, on top of the usual masks + 6-feet distancing, no open-mouth singing from kids, save for some soft spoken things, and I will sing only occasionally to demonstrate some things. Performance songs at concerts can be hummed! Could be fun and a unique experience? Let me know if this sounds okay to you...otherwise happy to cut the choir idea altogether! If you have some time tomorrow, I am happy to briefly meet to see how feasible it is.”
I think that Hiroki is going to be a perfect addition to our school.
Locals Only Seasonal School 2020
This year, we were coerced into hosting a seasonal school for local area children. Limiting the spread of COVID-19 was our school’s only priority. No residents outside of Niseko, Kutchan, Rankoshi or Niseko were allowed to enroll. I am grateful that we were able to employ two fantastic teachers, as well as a very reliable administrative assistant. I am grateful that the school did not operate at a loss. I am, of course, grateful that some local kids got to have fun at our campus.

Like all schools we will be doing our best to provide safe and healthy sporting options for our students.
Our program will begin on the week of August 31st with girls volleyball.
Tuesday and Thursday will be the practice nights for MS girls.
Varsity and JV girls will practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday with new Coach van den Borne. We welcome her to our program.
We also must acknowledge the outstanding coaching provided by our previous coach Alan Bossaer.
He was very popular and the girls really developed their skills and confidence under his coaching.
See pic of the final night scrimmage when the girls presented him with some gifts.
We hope to have some more announcements next week.
From the College Advising Team
Dear juniors, seniors, and families,
One of the positive changes that has come out of the covid-19 situation is that HIS students this year will be able to attend the Kanto Plain college fair virtually! This is the big college fair for Japanese international schools where students can learn about programs all over the world. This year, each college or university will have a virtual session, so it is important that students look up the date and time of schools they are interested in and register if necessary.
Please find attending schools here: https://sites.google.com/smis.ac.jp/kantoplaincollegefair/menu/upcoming-webinars
Students are reminded that if a session they would like to attend interferes with class time, they must get permission from their classroom teacher BEFORE attending the meeting.
As always, Mr. Fazio and Ms. Harmon are available to schedule meetings with students regarding questions they may have. Juniors will find the college advising sign up sheet on their homeroom/college advising Google classroom. If none of the slots available work with students’ study halls, they should email Ms. Harmon and Mr. Fazio to set up a time during lunch or after school.
