Head of School
Seasons Greetings to Our Community
Thursday marks the last day of school before the Winter Holidays (December 20 ~ January 13) and we at Hokkaido International School would like to take this opportunity to wish every member of our school community the very best of the holiday season. We wish you safe travels, enjoyable times with family friends and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in the New Year.
Disaster Response Training
On Thursday of last week, Hokkaido International School was host to the Ishikari Promotions Bureau of Hokkaido Government. Members of the bureau have been planning a disaster response training with our Student Council and members of staff for some time.
Student Council presented a set of information facts about natural disasters in Japan and gave facts on how best to respond in each situation. Students then participated in a quiz show, which the elementary students seemed to quite enjoy.
Following the quiz, teachers and students alike participated in creating slippers out of newsprint, a handy way to protect feet from potential hazards in the aftermath of a disaster. Students could then test these out by walking over hundreds of egg shells that had been brought in specially for the experience.
The final activity was to set up emergency shelter beds made out of cardboard.
HIS would like to thank our student council members for their hard work and for the members of the Ishikari Promotions Bureau for organizing this inforamtive session.
From the Principal’s Office
Wishing everyone a very happy holidays. Have a restful winter break and looking forward to seeing you in the new year!
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day Thanks!
On behalf of the teachers and staff of HIS, thank you so much to all the parents who contributed to the wonderful table of delicious food today! Everyone very much enjoyed their trip (or trips!) to the teacher room throughout the day.

Greetings from the Executive Board
Notices from the Executive Board:
Outgoing EB Chair:
November 30, 2019
Dear HIS Community,
It is with regret that I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign my position on the HIS Executive Board, effective immediately.
Although I have only been Executive Board Chair since August 1, 2019, it has been increasingly difficult for me to fulfill the requirements of Executive Board Chair as well as Board member, and I feel it would be best for me to step down from my board responsibilities at this time.
It has been a pleasure being part of the HIS Executive Board and I am honored to have served the HIS community as a Board member these past 5 1/2 years. The experience I earned has been very valuable and I wish the Board and New Chair, Phred Kaufman, the very best.
Incoming EB Chair:
Dear Husky Community,
I would like to thank Alan B for all of his hard work on the HIS Board.
I look forward to working with the Executive Board and Administration of the school in ensuring a smooth and positive transition to the new head of school.

I am excited about how the MP1 students can answer detailed questions about their fictional writing protagonists.
Thank you, teachers, for providing, each day, high interest, low stress learning at HISNiseko.
We will have a half-day of school on Thursday, December 19th to accommodate those who need to travel. Dismissal on Thursday is 11:40. Our buses will leave the campus at 11:45.

Great effort by the JV boys and Coach Marquez as they placed 3rd in their tournament last weekend. They played against teams with much larger student populations. Thanks also to Sarina and Yvette marquez who accompanied the team as chaperones/asst coaches/ motivators and calming influencers !
The varsity boys and girls both have tournaments first week back after the Holiday break.
Our Christmas Break is coming and we would like to see you in the Library helping your child to select books for the break. You are welcome to come in with your child and borrow from 3:30 to 4:30 each school day. Of course students can always come in before school or at lunchtime as well, so please do encourage them to always have a reading book that interests them!
We are also actively seeking to recruit volunteers to help our existing dedicated parents and former parents who are the mainstay of our library service. Without the support of parents we could not provide the range of books that we currently have. Please contact me if you would like more information email@example.com or drop into the library.
If you are an HIS parent and are looking for a babysitter for an evening or on the weekend, please feel free to contact firstname.lastname@example.org
