Departing Teachers 2019

HIS would like to acknowledge our departing teachers in this school year.

  • First and foremost, Ms. Sherrie Oda, for her 24 years of dedication to HIS. Sherrie has been deeply involved in almost every aspect of the school’s development as a founding member of the school’s Curriculum Committee. Ms. Oda was integral to the adoption and instruction of the IPC, Columbia University’s Reading and Writing Workshop approach, Singapore Math and -- as a trained Facilitator -- the Virtues Project. Ms. Oda has also most recently overseen the L.A. Curriculum across the school. Ms. Oda will be sorely missed at HIS but we look forward to seeing her back as a frequently needed substitute teacher and as a trainer for the Virtues Project.
  • Ms. Mary Ty Tan has been at HIS Niseko for this past year, taking on the very important role as the MP3 & Grade 6 teacher at the Niseko school. We appreciate Ms. Mary coming to support HIS during this year. We wish Ms. Mary our best as she returns to Singapore.
  • Ms. Liz Kennedy collaborated with the main campus at a very important time as HIS developed its Reggio-Emilia Inspired program at both campuses. We wish Ms. Kennedy our best as she heads to Thailand where she will be a Dean of Students.

Incoming Teachers for 2019 ~ 2020

HIS welcomes the following new teachers for next school year:

  • Ms. Rory Pickett will join Ms. Beatty next school year. Ms. Pickett is a career elementary teacher from the United States who last taught at Yokohama International School.
  • Mr. Andrew Wannar will join the HIS Niseko as the MP3 teacher. Mr. Wanner is another career teacher, coming from the United States originally but with recent teaching experiences in Vietnam and Indonesia.

Both incoming teachers coming highly recommended and we look forward to getting to know them even more.

  From the Principal’s Office

Graduation Day!
A big congratulations to the class of 2019!
We hope to see lots of people come out to celebrate with our graduates on Thursday, June 20th at 1:00 pm in the gym (followed by a reception in the MPR at 2:30).

Summer Vacation
Hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday, filled with joy and adventure. And looking forward to seeing everyone again in August at the opening ceremony!

MP1/3 Park Golf
This week the EY, MP1 and MP3 played park golf at the local Niseko course. This was a red letter event and a really fun time. The EY students got some Teacher- Assisted pars. Thank you teachers for your support in getting our junior golfers on the course.

It was a great time.

Pikinini Band Concert THANKS
Big time thanks to the Pikinini band for your latest, and best ever, concert. I really loved that you played John Phillip Sousa. Thank you, as always for a lovely moment at our little school.

Dear Huskies,

A short but immense thank you to all community members and parents who sold tickets and came through the rain to fill our auditorium last Friday. Last year we had 797 people come to watch our show with 170 performers. This year we had a whopping turnup of 845 super supportive people with only 130 students standing on stage! Needless to say, we already felt a huge difference in the applause after our very first piece! But it wasn’t just in the sheer increase of clapping volume- you clapped and cheered so much, and I think the students literally heard and felt all the love from you. And to answer your calls, they grew so much as people and as performers. Thank you so much for being a part of that process.

 From the College Advising Team

Dear parents of rising seniors,

Summer is a valuable time for juniors to begin the college search and application process. We have met with each junior individually and as a group, and we expect them to complete some key steps in the process this summer:
Complete the Common App for students applying to U.S. schools
Write a draft of their personal statement
Complete the assigned graphic organizer of “safety,” “target,” and “reach” schools
We hope to see the seniors in August with a good start to their search process!

Sports day for all Secondary students will be Wednesday, June 19th. The event will run all day. Students should be ready for the day with water gear and a change of clothes. Students should also be wearing their “house” color shirts.
