Welcome Back from Fall Break

A welcome back to school for all community members. For teachers and students, the Fall Break is a valuable chance to re-energize as we head into the colder months.

There are many exciting events ahead of us in November and December and we look forward to seeing community members at each of them.

Please note the important notices below in the HEX regarding Fall Festival and other items.

Parking for Fall Festival

We expect that the parking situation will again be a crowded one so we seek your help ahead of the Fall Festival. If you could…

Choose to come by public transportation if at all possible, which would relieve pressure on our parking lots.
Avoid parking on side streets, as this causes problems for our neighbors that result in complaints.
Park at either Coop or Max Value and walk to school.
Park on the southern parking lot of Takadai Elementary School (see the map). This is the first parking lot, immediately next to HIS. Please avoid the other parking spaces at Takadai.
Avoid parking at the front of the HIS school building.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Changes at HIS for Child Safety [Updated]

Teachers have further discussed changes regarding child safety. As a result, some adjustments have been made and are announced below.

Our WASC accreditation visiting committee mentioned a need to strengthen our practices to bring them into better alignment with other international and local public schools.

Below are the changes that we will implement immediately after Fall Break:

  • Front Door Changes
・Front door automated opening times will be tightened:
    AM - 8:00 ~ 8:30
    PM - 3:25 ~ 4:00
    AM - 9:15 - 9:30
    PM - 3:25 - 4:00
  • All guests & parents must sign in at a desk to be established outside the office.
・All guests must wear a lanyard bearing “Guest”, “Library Volunteer” or “Parent”.
  • All Night Time Activities (After 5:00)
・Students must be under direct supervision to remain in the building
・The front doors will be locked at 4:00 pm
・Students may not return to school if they leave the building until their activity starts.
  • Medications
・Following public school practice, HIS will no longer give medications to school students.** HIS teachers will, however, give an EpiPen injection in the event of an emergency.
  • After School Supervision
・To ensure safety, we ask that students leave the campus unless they are being directly supervised on the playground outside by a parent.

We appreciate your support as we work to better secure the campus and make it as safe a place as possible.

If you have any questions, please stop by to see Mr. Ratzliff.

** The dormitory is excepted from this rule so long as the parents of dormitory students give permission for basic medicines (cold or headache medicines)

  From the Principal’s Office

Welcome back from Fall Break!
Hope you and your families had a wonderful time over the week.
Incredibly, it's only now about seven weeks until Winter Break!

Fall Festival
A reminder that the Fall Festival is coming up this week -- Saturday, November 3rd, 10:00 - 14:00.
To support the PTA-organized activities at Fall Festival, we are still accepting donations for the following:
The raffle has always been a popular event for HIS visitors and community members. We are looking for prize donations. These donations should be new and unused and can be for children or for adults. “Experience” prizes can also be a donation option (for example dinner for two, concert tickets, hotel vouchers). It can be a great opportunity to promote your business!
We will be having a bake sale again - a very popular event every year. It can be sweets or savory. There is no need to wrap portions (for example the whole cake can be uncut, cookies don’t need to be wrapped individually). Please bring them either on November 2nd to room 206 or on November 3rd to the gym.
For more details concerning donations, please check the PTA website under Fall Festival 2018 - or contact us at
