September 6 Hokkaido Earthquake

Hokkaido residents were awaken to strong shaking at 3:07 AM on September 6. The earthquake was centered southeast of Atsuma Town and was felt across the island. Damage to a nearby power station caused all of Hokkaido to lose electricity.

The two days of canceled school put to test our emergency protocols. As we return to school, HIS teachers and staff will be reviewing and reflecting on the protocols to see how better to improve them for the sake of our students.

We ask parents to give us feedback on how emergency communications worked (or did not work).

September 5 Visit of Typhoon Jebi

Our 60th year of school seems to have attracted the attention of Mother Nature. The September 6 earthquake was not the only act of God to be experience already this year. The day before, the very powerful Typhoon Jebi swept past Hokkaido overnight bringing extreme winds that caused damage to the school’s parking lot fence and to the outdoor equipment shed.
We were happy to learn that insurance will cover the cost of the damage!
