  Head of School    

Construction Begins:
Representatives of Itaya Construction, Endo Architects, and the Executive Board Chair, met last week to finalize the contract to begin construction of the dormitory expansion.

Construction on the new dorm wing began today, Tuesday, Feb 6 with a power shovel scraping away the brickwork covering the front parking lot.

The structure of the new building wing will be completed by mid-June. Dormitory students will be able to move into the new facilities by mid-August. Finishing details on the exterior of the new wing will continue until August 31.


Snow Festival Classic Thanks

Thanks for a wonderful weekend of basketball. Our thanks go first and foremost to both Husky BB Teams, their coaches and to Mr. Kelly, the Athletic Director, for all the work put in to host the Snow Festival Classic.

We appreciate the sportsmanship shown by both teams and the fan support from students and community members who came out to cheer on the teams.

Hokkaido International School Spring Bazaar
Saturday - April 14

When: 10 am to 2 pm
Where: Gym and in the MPR
There will be a flea market, food for sale, games to play, hot and cold drinks - bargains and fun for the whole family!

Donations will be accepted for PTA stall Spring is a nice time to clean the house. If you have things that are still in good condition but are no longer used/needed, we will find them a new home!
Starting in March, there will be a large donation box at the school’s entrance.
Maybe you can encourage your child/ren to go through their toys and books!
* No clothes please (unless new with a tag).  Also, no shoes or stuffed animals.
* All proceeds from sales provide grants to clubs, activities, and materials which benefit student learning and enjoyment of school life.

Vendor Information:
Vendors can participate in the flea market to sell used or new goods - clothes, toys, books, handicrafts, etc. (excluding food/drinks). Vendor spaces are open to the school community and the general public. A vendor space costs 1,500yen and measures approximately 2 x 1.5 meters (a discount rate of 1,000 yen applies to current HIS Staff, Parents and Students).

To reserve a vendor space, please email  or call HIS (011-816-5000) by Wednesday, April 11th.
Vendor space positions are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis - hurry up and register!!!
*HIS welcomes amateur and professional veders alike.  Specific guidelines will be explained to all vendors in order to ensure a relaxed atmosphere for this family event.

Wednesday, February 7th at 3:45 in the teacher’s lounge.

After School Elementary Pickup Reminder:  Elementary parents please be sure to pick child(ren) up on time.  Please understand that by 3:45 at the latest, they need to be directly under your care.  

In winter months especially, there are often too many children running around the MPR and up and down the stairs while waiting for their parents to take them home.  Aside from being dangerous, this is disturbing to teachers who have many after-school duties.  

If your child is in an afterschool activity, please note that the pickup time will be 4:30

Please note the following distribution dates for reports:

Elementary: Students will bring home reports on Friday, February 9th

Secondary: Reports will be downloadable on Alma as of Wednesday, February 7th

Thank you all for a terrific week of learning at HIS Niseko.

Our EY teacher for the 2018-2019 academic year will be Elizabeth Kennedy.
Below is Elizabeth’s biography:


Elizabeth Kennedy grew up in Germany, Thailand, and the U.S. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s degree in Literacy. She has taught in six countries and has over fifteen years of teaching experience. She has taught at the prestigious American School of Dubai, American Embassy School in New Delhi, American School in Japan and Taipei American School.

Elizabeth is a huge proponent of the Reggio Emilia philosophy of teaching. She loves inspiring children to question, and explore the world around them. She aims to instill a joy of learning and a growth mindset. She encourages risk-taking and learning from mistakes.

Elizabeth is excited to join the HIS community and will be accompanied by her husband Chris, daughter Rory and son Henrik. She loves to run, ski, and bike with her family. She is also an avid reader, baker, and knitter.

Snow Removal
HIS Niseko is grateful to the town of #Niseko and especially the Elderly Working Association (高齢者事業団) for helping us to remove the snow from our roof! I say it all the time...We are so very lucky to live in this community.
Thank you for helping us learn in a safe and caring environment.

So ends 3 days of fast and furious basketball action with the completion of the SFC 2018.
Thank you to all who came along and supported the teams.
Our own team started with a strong win on Friday afternoon against the visitors from KIUA.
We then had an easy win Saturday morning against Shinyo HS. It was a much tougher struggle on Saturday afternoon against Hiragishi HS which we managed to win by just 1 point in an amazing game. This meant that we topped our pool and our next game on Sunday in the semi-final was against Hokkai HS. They were just a bit too good and we lost by 10 points. This put us into the ¾ playoff against KIUA Flames. This time the pressure was really on but sadly for us, we lost this game by just 1 point. A great effort by all the boys and Coaches Mario and Matt. Nagoya IS went on to claim the title by easily beating Hokkai HS. They were truly an outstanding team who remain undefeated all tournament and all season against all comers!

The girls had a great win on Friday against Hiragishi HS and then they played very bravely on Sunday with a much-depleted team to lose against Seishu HS. Congratulations to Hali who won the Free Throw Shooting Competition!
Coach Mario`s son Luka stepped up to score 18 goals in 1 minute to defeat all the other coaches … he is only 8 yrs old! See pic
A huge thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson for their continued support throughout the weekend in so many ways.
All members of HAA were also outstanding in officiating the score bench, live streaming, commentating and doing anything else required of them. See pics

 Donation request: Please help equip the Class of 2019 for their service trip to Cambodia! 

The Class of 2019 will be completing a Habitat for Humanity house build project in Cambodia in March. In order to help with site construction, we would like to ask for donations of the following materials:

  • 20 pliers
