Open House - September 18

A reminder to all that September 18, a national holiday, is a “regular” school day except for the fact that it also happens to be an Open House day for HIS.

This event showcases learning at the school for both HIS parents as well as the wider Sapporo community.

Parents are welcome all day to visit their children's classrooms and sneak a peek at the magic of learning! Visitors from outside the school community will also be touring the school that morning. Please say hello and sing the praises of our wonderful teachers and students!!

Following the Open House, the HIS PTA will hold a Community BBQ. Please come by, enjoy various food and drink (including Halal & Vegetarian options) and chat with fellow parents, teachers, administrators and staff.

Online Child Protection Training for Volunteers(for English Speakers)

Last week the school was able to offer child protection training or volunteer parents. For English speakers, there are other options that our staff have made use of in the past. Here is a link to a very helpful online training sight.   If you wish to volunteer at HIS, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the online training option.  Darkness to Light Click on the “Online Training Login” then select the “Individual” option and then set up a ‘New Account’ with the organization.

Our accreditation requirements have become stricter over the years and we will soon be requiring all volunteers to be trained in child protection understandings.

We hope that this opportunity helps us to be a stronger institution and one that has the best interests of our students in mind.

The Accreditation Cycle

The 2017~18 school year is also a WASC Accreditation year so we will be uniquely focused on what our school is doing and in discovering our strengths and areas for growth. Look for updates and news regarding the WASC Focus on Learning Self Study. We expect to conclude the process through a visit from the Visiting Committee of WASC which will likely be here sometime in April.

As parents, you may be asked to participate in conversations and surveys. We look forward to your support with time as we seek to become an even better school.

The HS girls Volleyball team played their first game last Sunday against a very strong team from Hiragishi HS. All the girls showed great spirit and skills. It was a great experience to be challenged at this level and we will welcome the chance to play them again. On Wednesday we will play the visitors from Sumikawa JH in our own gym starting from 4:30. This should be an easier challenge for us.

 HIS Parent E-mailing List

Husky Parents!!
Do you ever have trouble receiving the weekly HEx, Husky-Info bulletins or other school-wide emails?  Do you have another email address to which you’d like to receive these electronic communications? If so, please email our communications coordinator at so we can update our mailing lists and include you as soon as possible!

 Zumba is up and "dancing!"

This is an HIS community activity, welcoming all ages! We have a wonderful, energetic teacher (Shiho-Sensei) who leads us from 5:30-6:15 every Thursday evening in the MPR (Sapporo). The cost is 500 yen for middle school and high schoolers and 1000 yen for adults.  Besides this very reasonable fee, all you need is some determination to give it a go, a pair of supportive athletic shoes, and comfortable clothing. Mrs. Oda (teacher) and Mrs. Atsuko Clipstone (HIS parent) are the contact people for this activity. If you need babysitting, please let Mrs. Oda (Rm #202)  know -- we will be trying to arrange something if there is a need. See you there! ZUMBA ON!!!!

 From PTA

PTA Community BBQ - Volunteers Needed

We will be having a Community BBQ after the Open House on September 18th, right after school ends at 15:30.
Food, drinks, plates, and cutlery will be provided, but we would love to have volunteers!

We would need help for:

  • shopping
  • preparing
  • setting up
  • cooking
  • cleaning up

Even if you can only volunteer for 30 minutes, that would be great. Every little bit helps!
Please e-mail if you can help. Also, if you have specific work/time(s) that you can help, please let us know.
You can e-mail to the same address or call Megumi (PTA Co-Chair) 080-1893-3228, if you have any questions.
The student council will be planning activities for elementary students.
Let’s enjoy the beautiful fall in Sapporo with a tasty BBQ!

This year’s Fall Festival will be on November 3rd and it is one of the biggest PTA sponsored events at HIS.
We need a lot of volunteers for selling food and drinks, helping with the raffle, and many other activities.
It would be wonderful if you could join us, even just for 30 minutes. If you cannot make it on the day, there are other ways to help in preparation. So, please let us know!
There will be a Fall Festival organizing meeting on Wednesday, September 27th.  We welcome everyone to come if they can.

If you have any questions, please write to the address above or call Megumi at 080-1893-3228. Or email
Your help is greatly appreciated.

PTA Steering Committee Meetings

Please note, all Steering Committee meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month.  Any parent is welcome to attend, and please let Neil or Megumi know if you would like to become a regular (and voting) member of the committee.

Next meeting will be Wednesday October 4th.

 Outdoor Education

Junior Overnight  On August 31st and September 1st the junior class hiked up Soranuma-dake, staying overnight at the Bankenuma hut. We enjoyed perfect weather at the summit, for excellent panoramic views of Sapporo and surroundings!
