Head of School
Secondary Student Speech Contest
Last week’s student speech competition was a wonderful opportunity for HIS secondary students to demonstrate the progress they have made in standing before their peers and teachers and demonstrate that they have taken another step towards being the effective Husky communicators they aim to be.
A large thanks is due to faculty-emeritus, Ms. Amalie Aseltine, who advised the Speech Club and coached the thirteen students through the development of and presentation process of their speeches. Ms. Aseltine volunteered her services to the this process and we and the students who benefited from her work owe her an immense debt of gratitude for what she has achieved.
Finally, congratulations are to be extended to all participants and in particular the three finalists whose strong performance lead to their selection. Finalists were: Sashsa Shin (Grade 11 - 1st place), Kate Fukui (Grade 12 - 2nd) and Raja (Grade 8 - 3rd). Ainu Cultural Experience
Last week middle school students were treated to a bit of Hokkaido’s unique cultural diversity through a visit of Sapporo University students who came to present on Ainu culture.
Sapporo University, a sister school of HIS, is home to an Ainu studies program that has drawn much interest. The students came to dressed in traditional Ainu clothing, performed on Ainu instruments and worked with our students to join in Ainu dances.
HIS is thankful for the opportunities provided by our relationship with Sapporo University and we look forward to hosting them again in the future.
