A Thanks for Opening Ceremony 2016-17
A thanks for such a wonderful turnout to Opening Ceremony for this school year, and, an even bigger thanks to those who helped to make it such a success. With the HIS Promotional Vidoe and the unveiling of the HIS Logo and Husky Mascot, it was a very exciting event to be a part of. We would like to wish everyone a very successful 2016 ~ 2017 school year.

HIS is at peak enrollment with the biggest high school we have ever had. This presents some challenges as we find ways to fit into the building. We appreciate your patience as we work to adjust classes and schedules.

A Welcome to the New School Year: From the staff and faculty of HIS we would like to welcome you to the new school year. This is an exciting year for HIS, a year when we welcome the largest student population we have ever had.

2016 also marks the launch of the HIS Branding Project. At the Opening Ceremony, you will have been able to see and hear first hand about the progress being made to become an even better school.

As part of Opening Ceremony, HIS also unveiled the Husky Logo wall which was beautifully completed this summer on the long wall of the Gym.

HIS Security Gate: With the help of the Office of Overseas Schools and of the US Consulate General,  HIS was able to complete  installation of the security gate to better protect our children and close off the back field during play times.

From Thursday 18th, we ask that parents not park in the back parking lot as the gates will close at 8:30 each morning. They will be reopened at 3:30 each day. We appreciate your understanding. The front parking lot will remain fully available to parents.

Challenge to the Community
A note to the community about our school wide challenge for the year:

How can we learn to love reading (or love reading even more) and share this love with others?”
There will be more details about the challenge in upcoming newsletters. Until then, enjoy your reading!

And Finally…
In order to make a difference in the beautification and functionality of our school’s campus. Jaden Jenner’s dad, Bryce, and Hemi and Shelby’s dad, Craig, have interviewed a contractor to re-sod our school field while also expanding our driveway.

The project, while expensive, will allow our students to play soccer on real grass and will allow parents to drive in and out of school more easily. It will make for better drainage and will help to attract more families to our learning community.
I have included below an aerial view of the planned project.

The work to be done:

  • Dig up and level the field with backhoe
  • Add topsoil and level
  • Roll top soil
  • Lay turf
  • Roll turf
  • Create parking spaces with gravel & top quality asphalt both at the front, sides of driveway ( this will clean up the driveway and eliminate a lot & rear of school.

  • Proposed work and materials 2,305,000 JPY
  • 8% Tax 184,400 JPY
  • Total 2,489,400 JPY
  • Bryce’s contribution 530,000 JPY
  • Craig’s contribution 530,000 JPY
  • Money still to be raised: 1,429,400 JPY

All folks receiving this message have the opportunity to help out and pledge money to this project. Alas, you are under absolutely no obligation to pledge. If you do wish to pledge, please email We will get in touch with you if and when the money is raised.
Below is an aerial view of our plan. Please see me if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you for your consideration and support.
Again, welcome back to a wonderful year of learning and community building. It is going to be a terrific year.

Warm regards,
Barry Mernin
