A Welcome Back from Winter Break - Welcome to the Year of the Monkey

I trust that students, parents and teachers enjoyed a wonderful Winter Break and the opportunity to be together as families to celebrate national and international holidays and the fun and good times that come with the times. We look forward to seeing you in classrooms in the school and hope that you have come back refreshed and full of energy and ideas.

Executive Board & Board of Councilors PD

Dr. Marc Frankel from Triangle Associates will be visiting HIS to present on board practices for independent schools. Dr. Frankel is one of the best known presenters on the topic among the East Asia Regional Council of Schools, of which HIS has been a member in long standing.

  From the Principal’s Office

Welcome back from winter break!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.  And all the best in 2016!

Please note that WrAP (Writing Assessment Program) testing for grades 3 to 10 is coming up in the week of January 25 - 29.  I will be sending home a letter next week explaining to parents the nature and importance of these writing tests (administered by the Educational Research Bureau in the US).

Semester 1 Reports:  Semester 1 comes to a close on January 29th.  Teachers will complete report cards and they will be sent out at the end of the following week.

A reminder that the next sitting of the SAT is on coming up on Saturday, January 23rd. Students participating should remember to be on time and bring proper ID.

Redesigned SAT Exams (as of May 7)

Everyone should be aware that, following the January SAT, the format of the exam will be redesigned.  I still have some remaining  information packages (explaining the changes) in my office.  Any student (or parent) who would like to pick one up, please drop by my office.. The May 7th SAT exam will include these changes.

 @ Niseko

Greetings from HISNiseko.

SantaProject 2015

was a smashing success. Due to a lot of financial assistance, scores of orphans in the Niseko area received individualised Christmas presents handed to them from a relatively skinny, ukulele-playing Santa-san.

Thank you to all who donated.

See you next year!

Teacher Administrator HIS Niseko

 HIS Cheerleading Recruits
 Elementary Students

As the snowy season approaches, every year during the Snow Festival season, HIS hosts a basketball tournament here in our gym. The Snow Festival Classic showcases  the Junior Varsity Boys, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls teams. Our teams are joined by those from all around Hokkaido and even an international school in Nagoya.

In order to make the tournament more enjoyable for all, HIS Athletics is creating a Cheerleading Team for students in Early Years and Mileposts 1, 2 & 3. Boys and girls are both invited and practices will be every Thursday from 3:30~4:30. Practices will begin based on the availability of those who sign up. Performances will include the Pep Rally on Day 1 of the Tournament, Feb 5th, and the half-time show on Saturday, Feb 6th. If your child would like to join, please contact us as soon as possible!! We are looking forward to seeing everyone at practice!!

 Student Council One Yen Drive

HIS Student Council is currently raising money for an orphanage in Cameroon. Our fundraiser is called the one yen drive. There will be petroleum bottles in every class and classes will put one yen coins in the bottles. The goal is to collect as many one yen coins as possible. Our goal is to raise $800-$1000 this year. Funds raised will go towards building showers for those who live and work at the orphanage, as well as towards buying school supplies, computers and indoor cooking facilities. The fundraiser will run until February and donations will be made in March.

 College Corner

Seniors are now working on submitting materials for deadlines.
One area we’ve seen changes in are the requirements for students who are attending international schools abroad and need transcripts from previous schools to HIS. If you are in this category, please take time to contact those schools and request official transcripts. Even if the school accepts our combined transcript, visa applications may require originals.
