Concerns for Safety: MPR
Dear HIS families -- At team meetings, HIS teachers have again raised concerns for student safety after school. Today I would like to bring up one area, that of safety of children in the MPR (Multipurpose Room) after school. It is a wonderful play space, but after school, children are often not following safety rules in the absence of teachers (who are busy attending to after school duties) and on many occasions are running. We fear that accidents will occur.
As we seek solutions -- we will be speaking about the issues with the PTA and at Coffee Mornings -- we would ask that you help us by monitoring children in the MPR so that we can ensure that accidents are prevented. The MPR is booked for activities almost every day so we would ask that children who are not in activities leave the building by 3:45. Many thanks -- School Administration
Executive Board & Board of Councilors PD
Dr. Marc Frankel from Triangle Associates visited HIS to present on board practices for independent schools. Dr. Frankel is one of the best known presenters on the topic among the East Asia Regional Council of Schools, of which HIS has been a member in long standing. We thank him for being here with us.

Our next trip will be to Moiwa on Friday afternoon, January 22, for racing lessons. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

The JV boys basketball team enjoyed their tournament in Yokohama over the weekend. They didn`t win any games against the bigger schools but it was a great experience for all. A big thank you to coach John and Mr Gambino for supervising over the past 3 days. This week our HS boys and girls teams travel to tournaments in Nagoya and Kobe. Good luck to them both.

HIS Cheerleading Recruits
As the snowy season approaches, every year during the Snow Festival season, HIS hosts a basketball tournament here in our gym. The Snow Festival Classic showcases the Junior Varsity Boys, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls teams. Our teams are joined by those from all around Hokkaido and even an international school in Nagoya.
In order to make the tournament more enjoyable for all, HIS Athletics is creating a Cheerleading Team for students in Early Years and Mileposts 1, 2 & 3. Boys and girls are both invited and practices will be every Thursday from 3:30~4:30. Practices will begin based on the availability of those who sign up. Performances will include the Pep Rally on Day 1 of the Tournament, Feb 5th, and the half-time show on Saturday, Feb 6th. If your child would like to join, please contact us as soon as possible!! We are looking forward to seeing everyone at practice!!
Student Council One Yen Drive
HIS Student Council is currently raising money for an orphanage in Cameroon. Our fundraiser is called the one yen drive. There will be petroleum bottles in every class and classes will put one yen coins in the bottles. The goal is to collect as many one yen coins as possible. Our goal is to raise $800-$1000 this year. Funds raised will go towards building showers for those who live and work at the orphanage, as well as towards buying school supplies, computers and indoor cooking facilities. The fundraiser will run until February and donations will be made in March.
Seniors are now working on submitting materials for deadlines.
One area we’ve seen changes in are the requirements for students who are attending international schools abroad and need transcripts from previous schools to HIS. If you are in this category, please take time to contact those schools and request official transcripts. Even if the school accepts our combined transcript, visa applications may require originals.
Upcoming Events:SAT - January 23 (register by December 15th)
