Welcome to Semester 2

Mid winter has arrived and the start of the second semester of the school year. We would like to welcome the many new students who are joining us from today, January 1. There is much ahead of us this semester: amazing learning experiences, outdoor educational opportunities and school events and functions.

We will be starting off Semester 2 with 191 students, up by 11 from the start of the year!

Featuring Some Husky Spirit:
Mr. Watanabe’s Snow Fort

If you have had a chance to enter the back field of the school, you will have seen the Snow Fort that our bus driver Mr. Watanabe has been building.

Mr. Watanabe wanted to make a fort that the kids could enjoy playing in and he set to work on it during his own free time. It has evolved into a very fun space.

If you have a moment to thank Mr. Watanabe for the fort, I am sure he would be greatly pleased to hear it is being appreciated. Mr. Watanabe, thanks for sharing your Husky Spirit!

  From the Principal’s Office

Welcome to February and Semester 2!

Secondary student phone use:
Please be reminded that (following significant debate at secondary teacher meetings about student use of phones at school), it was unanimously decided to ban phone use altogether (except at lunch hour).

Although smart phones occasionally have practical learning applications (use for research, teaching apps, etc), teachers have come to the conclusion that phones are, in balance, far more a distraction to learning than they are a benefit.

To address this concern, students have been told that, starting in semester 2, teachers will confiscate any phone seen during class time - including in the hallway.

These phones will be given to me and students will need to pick them up from my office after school.

(As noted in my email last week, there will be consequences for repeated offence).

Note: If in an emergency parents need to contact their child during school hours, we ask that you phone the office, rather than your child directly.

Thank-you to parents for your understanding and support of this policy.

Semester 1 Reports will be sent home within the next 2 weeks.

PTA Steering Committee Meeting

Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 3rd.  Please remember that all parents are welcome to attend.

 @ Niseko

Three Cheers for the MP3 Writers.
Congratulations are in order for the MP3 students for successfully completing their annual standardised writing tests. I am quite pleased with their opinion essays and look forward to seeing the results.
Teachers, we will use the upcoming data as one tool to move our writing curriculum forward. We will set collective writing goals for the 2016-17 academic year.

Skiing Unit
Yesterday’s skiing session again was simply wonderful. We learned a ton from the expert instructors, Todd of greater Toronto and Joe from Fukuoka. Both are professional instructors of the highest caliber from Hokkaido Core.

With their training, we are ready for the Friday’s race day.

PTA- THANK YOU
Thank you, PTA for a most interesting discussion. I look forward to further discussions with the staff on what International Mindedness means specifically for our little school.
Our next PTA meeting is scheduled for March 4 @ 9:20 am in Mr. Mernin’s room.

Movie Night -The Incredibles
Our first movie night of 2016 was a complete success. Thank you, Mr. Sinclair and Mrs. Senzai for making it so family-friendly. I loved watching the kids (and grandmother) enjoying the fine storytelling from the folks of Pixar.
Great night.

Enjoy this video and have a relaxing Saturday.
Take care,

Teacher Administrator HIS Niseko

 Outdoor Leadership

Outdoor Leadership Class:
Sapporodake Snowshoe Hike

The Outdoor Leadership class embarked on their Sapporodake hut and hike trip during the weekend of January 16th and 17th. The trip started with a 5k snowshoe hike in the dark up to the rustic Heyamizu hut where the students spent a cool night. The next morning an array of hot ramen and rice meals were consumed before the snowshoe towards Sapporodake summit. The advance on the summit was filled with beautiful panoramic views and picturesque fields of Hokkaido powder. After a successful summit, the students descended down the mountain for onsen and curry as a finish to a great weekend!  Great work OL class!
