Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences I will be sending an email out to all parents this week regarding the scheduling of parent conferences for October 12.
Our annual Open House was quite a success. We were delighted to have so many visitors to our humble little international school. Our visitors looked quite pleased. Many thanks go to Melissa Moss and Chihiro Barton for your help in facilitating the event.
Niseko Halloween Festival 2015
The Niseko community is gearing up for the annual Halloween Festival. This year’s event will take place On Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 to 15:00. This year’s festival will have a costume contest, local food carnival, lucky draw, bouncy castle, and face painting.
Contestants for the costume contest and trick or treat can register to enter from 9:30 to 11:30. The price for entering the costume contest is 500 yen. The event will begin and end at the Chomin Center.
Many thanks to Paul Haggart of the Niseko Town Council and the HIS Sapporo student volunteers for their support in making this event so very special.
Hangetsu Trail Race
As a culmination of our PE unit on running we would like to take the students on a trail run around Hangetsu Lake. HIS Niseko MP1 and MP3 have ran and snowshoed this course in Spring and Autumn in previous years. We would like to know if their are any parents volunteers who would help us on this day?
Here are some details to consider…
Date - Friday October 2nd
Start time at Hangetsu - 9:40
Expected running time - 30mins to 1hr (MP3 30mins Early Years up to 1hr)
Length - 2.9 kms
Depart Hangetsu - before 11:30
We would like to ask for some help in running around the course with the students.This would help us ensure that all students make it around the course safely. Please let us know if you are available on this day.
After School Violin Lessons
HIS offers after school violin lessons with a professional musician. Lessons are held on Wednesday & are available in English & / or Japanese. A few lesson times remain available starting from 4:45pm. If interested, please contact Alison Manjyoume, MP3 Teacher, Room 205 for an application or email
VIOLIN TEACHER PROFILE
Ms Kawamura has been teaching violin in Sapporo for over 25 years. Ms Kawamura founded the HIS After School Violin Lessons Program in 1996 where she taught until 2005.
She graduated from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Kanagawa and studied at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music in the U.S under the direction of Silvian Iticovici. Ms Kawamura has worked as a freelance musician as well as performing regularly with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra.
Volunteers & Costume Crew Needed for Elementary Concert
The Music Department is looking for volunteers and costume crew who are available and willing to help to get ready for the elementary concert. Jobs for volunteers will include: taking photos and video during regular music lessons, helping out at rehearsals, etc. Jobs for the costume crew will include: sorting out costumes, making costumes and props, etc. If you have time and energy during school hours and/or after school and are willing to help, please email Ms. Kumagai (firstname.lastname@example.org) the following information by Friday October 16th.

It was a full day of volleyball action for the high school teams as we played a total of 12 sets of fast paced action in away games with Hokusei and Seishin High Schools. This weekend the JV team will travel to Yokohama for their tournament. The MS team will create history for being our first ever team to represent our school at a MS tournament in Kobe. Three more weeks of After School activities remain before Fall Break. We would love to hear from any teacher or parent willing to lead an activity after this time.
Highschool Gets Out
Grades 9-10 to highland Niseko and grades 11-12 to lake Shikotsu, for the entire highschool went hiking and camping for two days last week.

TERRY FOX RUN in Sapporo 2015
Terry Fox’s “Marathon of Hope” across Canada started in 1980. His inspiring story has since spread around the world with charity runs held each year in honour of his courageous fight against cancer.
We are proud to support this annual Charity Run in Sapporo with the motto of “working together to outrun cancer.” All proceeds and goodwill contributions will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. We’ve all been touched by cancer, so we hope you’ll add your touch to finding a cure by joining the 2015 Terry Fox Run in Sapporo.

PIANO / KEYBOARD TEACHER PROFILE
Ms Kumagai graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Psychology. She is due to complete her Master’s Degree in Music Education from the Teachers College, Columbia University, this year. She has taught K-12 music at schools in both USA and Japan. She was an active piano accompanist in Missoula Montana, USA, founded and directed Show Choir in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture, and taught Middle School Keyboard Class at HIS last school year.

PIANO TEACHER PROFILE
Ms Oshima graduated from Hokkaido University of Education with a music degree. She has performed with Concerto da Salone and Concorde and many concerts hosted by the Chopin Association. She is currently teaching at Otani Junior College and is a member of Japan Piano Education Alliance.
