Welcome to the second week of school!

A big thanks to Mr. Adams for arranging the field activities for the secondary school on Friday afternoon.  It was an excellent ice-breaker opportunity for our new students to get to know our returning students.  Lots of new friendships made that day!

Thank-you for all the valuable feedback at the opening ceremony PTA session!  A great turnout and lots of new volunteers!

A special thank-you to PTA co-chair Atsuko Clipstone and PTA Steering Committee member Mika Nakamura for all their organizational help on Wednesday.  

The next PTA Steering Committee will meet in the teacher's lounge on Wednesday, September 2nd at 3:30.  
Even if you are not on the steering committee, all parents are more than welcome to attend!  Please drop by and see what the PTA is doing for the school community (and how you might participate)!

Greetings from HIS Niseko.

My name is Barry Mernin. I've taught in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Jordan and the USA. I am excited to learn with my amazing staff. I can’t believe how beautiful life is here. My baby boy, Taiga and wife, Naomi-san are adjusting quite nicely.

 After School Piano Lessons 


HIS offers after school piano lessons with a professional musician. Lessons are held on Tuesday  & are available in Japanese.  If Tuesday lessons fill up, Thursday will be available. If interested, please contact Alison Manjyoume, MP3 Teacher, Room 205 for an application.


Kayoko Oshima

Ms Oshima graduated from Hokkaido University of Education with a music degree. She has performed with Concerto da Salone and Concorde and many concerts hosted by the Chopin Association. She is currently teaching at Otani Junior College and is a member of Japan Piano Education Alliance.


HIS is proud to confirm that Mr. Glenn Fukushima will be able to visit HIS this week, on Tuesday, August 25th from 2:00 ~ 3:00PM.


I would encourage all HIS parents to attend his lecture and Q&A session. Mr. Fukushima is an expert on both business and education, and is highly valued as a speaker at events worldwide for his perspectives on international experience and educational reform. We have a rare opportunity to hear him speak directly to our community about these perspectives. Please join us for an intimate talk in the MPR at HIS.

Below you will find a biography of Mr. Fukushima, followed by a summary of the event.
A native of California, Mr. Fukushima obtained his doctorate Harvard Law School, and had an opportunity to study  as a Fulbright Fellow  at the Faculty of Tokyo University.
Mr.Fukushima was Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative for Japan and China (1988-1990) at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Executive Office of the President. Mr. Fukushima served two terms as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, 1998-1999, and Vice President, 1993-1997.  He has served on numerous corporate boards and government advisory councils in the United States, Europe, and Japan and on the Board of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, America-Japan Society,  Japan Society of Boston, Japan Society of Northern California, Japanese American National Museum, U.S.-Japan Council, and Japan’s Economic Federation.
Mr. Fukushima’s publications include Nichi-Bei Keizai Masatsu no Seijigaku [The Politics of U.S.-Japan Economic Friction], winner of the 9th Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize in 1993 & Nihon Wa Kanarazu Yomigaeru[Japan will surely Be Back ](1999,Bungei-shunjyui pub.).

Husky Hugs go out to:

  • Parents, Mayumi Kawahara and Kaori Koga for putting on the community lunch after Opening Ceremony.
  • Ogawa-san and all school staff for putting in such an effort to clean up and organize the school.
  • Mr. Adams for organizing a wonderful afternoon of team-building fun on Friday for the secondary students.



We welcome all old and new players to volleyball and soccer practices under coaches Adams, Kelly and Sim. Schedules will be posted when students return. Community basketball is a popular activity each Wednesday between 6- 8 pm. All welcome !

 Elementary Activities 

Do you have an interest, talent or skill that you would like to share with a group of elementary students each week after school ? Usually each block of activities is for 1 hour, once a week and continues for about 5 weeks. We would love to hear from any teachers or parents who can support this program. Please contact Mr Kelly.

 Outdoor Leadership 

Soranuma & Niseko Up First
Highschool Students: Ready your backpack, break-in your boots, and fluff your socks, because the overnight hiking and camping trips to Soranuma and Niseko will be here fast, September 3-4.

Yoko Kawamura
Ms Kawamura has been teaching violin in Sapporo for over 25 years. Ms Kawamura founded the HIS After School Violin Lessons Program in 1996 where she taught until 2005.
She graduated from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Kanagawa and studied at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music in the U.S under the direction of Silvian Iticovici. Ms Kawamura has worked as a freelance musician as well as performing regularly with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra.

 Husky Highlights 

Opening Ceremony

We extend a heartfelt thank you to all parents who were able to attend our Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, August 19th. We recognize the crucial role parents play in the successes of our students, and the strong presence made by parents on Wednesday was a great example of the continued support HIS families provide their children. After the ceremony, students, parents, faculty and staff enjoyed lively conversation and great food in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR).

 College Corner 

My Name is Nicholas Fazio and I have been working here at HIS since 2011 in the middle school. I have taken over Colleen Currie’s college counseling position and am very much looking forward to working alongside the students in preparing for College. Keep your eye on the HEX for upcoming events and deadlines, such as the upcoming College Fair on September 10th.

Shoko Kumagai
Ms Kumagai graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Psychology. She is due to complete her Master’s Degree in Music Education from the Teachers College, Columbia University, this year. She has taught K-12 music at schools in both USA and Japan. She was an active piano accompanist in Missoula Montana, USA, founded and directed Show Choir in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture, and taught Middle School Keyboard Class at HIS last school year.
