 Husky Highlights

“One of 8000”

We are proud to celebrate the achievement of Jin-Xiang Yu, an HIS graduate who beat the odds and continues to achieve at a phenomenal level. She recently visited us at HIS and left smiles and inspiration in her wake. Our hats are off to you, Jin-Xiang!

Jin-Xiang Yu ('07) graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy with a Certificate in Theatre Dance in New York City in 2009. After conducting some research in Linguistics and Communication Disorders at Mercy College, NY, she was recruited to play volleyball at CUNY Queens College, where she got injured and started studying classical voice instead. She graduated last year from Queens College with a Bachelor of Music in Voice and a Bachelor of Arts in General Linguistics and was accepted to the full scholarship program at Yale University, where she was one of 8000 sopranos accepted into Yale Opera. She also won the Graduate Arts Award from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, which pays for her living expenses while at Yale. She will graduate next year May with a Master of Music in Opera Performance, and she plans to launch her performance career either in the U.S. or Europe. She is truly grateful for her artistic and academic experiences while at H.I.S. and believes that she could not have made it this far without her formative years here

 Husky Hugs

Husky Hugs go out to:

  • Peter & Silvia Mergaert for their generous donations of furnishings to the school and Dormitory 2 program. We will sincerely miss the Mergaert family and appreciate the practical help they have provided with their donations.
  • Hajime Katayama for the immense amount of work he has done this year to get us electronically ready for this new school year. Thanks so much Hajime!

Fantastic to see such good numbers of players at the first practice sessions of volleyball and soccer. We are organizing games for them against local Japanese schools in the coming weeks. The soccer team will however play a game against the `Teacher and Friends All Stars` this Tuesday after school.

 Elementary Activities

Notes will come home this week for any children to choose from the after school activities on offer. Mr Kelly and Ms Speirs will both be leading an activity.

 “HIS Huskies at the Races”

Seven high school students were invited to the the Japan Race Association race track near Hokkaido University to present flowers to national and international jockeys participating in an international competition. Our students exchanged a few words with the jockeys, presented flowers on behalf of JRA and posed for a photo opp immediately after.

Following the presentation, students were permitted to stay to watch the races and enjoy lunch among the gathered crowd. It was a proud moment for our students to be ambassadors.
