School Profile

Hokkaido International School is a private (secular), coeducational day/boarding school offering an American-style education from early years to high school for students of all nationalities. HIS was founded in 1958 and remains the only international school on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). English is the language of instruction.

Child Protection at Hokkaido International School

As a member of the Japan Council of International Schools, HIS abides by the following: 

In accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Articles 19 and 34) the Japan Council of International Schools acknowledges the duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. We are committed to Ensuring safeguarding practice reflecting statutory responsibilities, government guidance, and compliance with the best practice and accrediting body requirements.

As an additional follow up to ensuring a safe school environment, in the fall of 2019, school administration introduced the HIS - Vendor / Volunteer Service Provider Agreement, which requires all volunteers and vendor providers to be trained in child protection and to uphold and sign to the school's Code of Conduct. 

Accreditation, Associations & Memberships 

Hokkaido International School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). HIS is an International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and an International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) school.
HIS' latest accreditation term of 6 years was granted in 2018

Hokkaido International School is located in Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost major island. A metropolis of 1.9 million, Sapporo is the largest city on the island and the 5th largest city in Japan.
